In February 2008, the first point based system of the UK was launched by the Labour government based on the Australian system. The point based system only applies to people entering into the country outside the European Union, since the UK is a member of European Union.
The main UK immigration route for migrants from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) to come to the United Kingdom is the points based visa system. You must pass a points based assessment to be eligible for a visa in any of the 5 tiers. Every tier has different entitlements, entry requirements and conditions for people wishing to work and live in the UK and every tier will necessitate you to allocate enough number of points to get entry clearance or leave to stay in the United Kingdom.
Age, earnings, qualifications, language and funds are the traits on the basis of which points are allocated, with a different number of points needed for each of the five tiers. Your ability to speak English and the ability to fund your initial stay in the UK will play a very significant role in most cases.

Age: One can allocate 5 to 20 points in this category, younger applicants get more points than the older ones.
English Language: 10 points must be obtained by each applicant for English language ability. Nationals of English language countries automatically obtain 10 points.
Qualifications: In some tiers, education level is assessed from 30 to 50 points and in others, it is assessed from 5 to 15 points.
Earnings: Candidates financial means are assessed depending on the tier earnings or maintenance.
UK Experience: 5 points can be obtained for the experience of an individual of Work in UK.
Certificate of Sponsorship: The evaluation of CoS is done with 30 to 50 points.
Five Tier Visa consists of the following:
Tier 1 visas is for highly skilled individuals, investors, entrepreneurs and graduate students from outside the European Union and European Economic Area who would contribute in the economy of the UK. To be eligible to apply, candidates do not need a job offer but they must pass a points based assessment.
There are three main routes in this tier:
Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur - Recent graduates are able to open a business in the UK because of this route.
Tier 1 Entrepreneur - Migrants will be authorized to establish themselves in business within the UK via this route.
Tier 1 Investor - Persons who want to make an investment of $ 2,000,000 in the UK go through this route.
Tier 1 Exceptional Talent - People who have exceptional talent in their field of expertise move through this route.
Visa holder can also bring their common law partner or children to the UK with them in some cases with the help of family visa, but he/she must show proof of sufficient funds to provide for them. Duration of stay is up to 3 years and 4 months. Period of extended stay is up to 2 years.

For fulfilling any of the following criteria, applicant can gain up to 25 more points additionally.

Nationals of countries where English is not an official language must take a test to prove their language ability as per the English language criteria. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most popular and widely accessible approved English language tests for migrants to the UK. IELTS has reading, writing, listening and speaking sections in which migrant has to score at least 6.5 on each band.
10 points can be automatically claimed by nationals of Australia, the Bahamas, Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, New Zealand, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and United States of America for English ability.
Skilled workers, professional sports people, and clergy members from outside the EEA with a job offer to fill gaps within the UK labour force come under UK Tier 2 General Category.
There are four main routes in this tier:
Tier 2 General Visa - Migrants who have a job offer within the UK for a medium-highly skilled employment are eligible for this route.
Tier 2 Ministers of Religion Visa - Migrants who have a pastoral role to take employment within the UK in the community of religion are eligible for this route.
Tier 2 Intra-Company Transfer Visa - Medium or highly skilled staff are transferred by overseas companies through this route, to the same company or organization based in the UK.
Tier 2 Sportsperson Visa - Sports personnel and highly skilled coaches who wish to take up employment within the UK are eligible for this route.

For filling specific labour shortages within the UK, this category was designed for low-skilled workers but after the system became operational, the British Government decided there was no need of further unskilled immigration from outside the EU. It has been removed under the coalition.
The students aged over 16 from outside the EEA who want to study in the United Kingdom, either at a school, college or university come under this category. There must be a place for applicants at a registered UK educational establishment before they can apply.
There are two main routes in this tier:
Tier 4 General Student Visa - To study post 16 education within the UK.
Tier 4 Child Student Visa - applicable to children between 4 to 16 who want to come to UK, and attend an independent school to continue their education.

According to UK Points Calculator, students need to score 40 points under this category which consisted of:
Six sub-tiers of temporary workers are contained by this category, including charity, creative and supporting, sporting, religious workers, and the youth mobility scheme. About 55,000 young people are enabled every year to work in the UK on working holidays. Young people from countries that have reciprocal arrangements with the UK are awarded visas.
Tier 3 and Tier 5 are temporary routes but migrants who have taken advantage of these routes will not be able to switch out of them once they arrive in the UK. Given that migrants have fulfilled certain requirements, they will be able to switch between the tiers. Dependents are permitted under Tiers 1, 2, 4 and 5.

50 points must be scored by people in the youth mobility scheme which consists of 30 points for nationality, 10 points for age (in the range 18-30 years), and 10 points for the capacity to support oneself financially.
