Canada has once again secured its place among the world’s leading nations after being ranked 19th overall in the latest 2026 Best Countries rankings released by U.S. News & World Report. While the country slipped from its earlier top-five position, the updated report highlights that the new ranking system is now based on hard statistical data rather than public opinion surveys used in previous years.
Canada’s strongest performance came in the Culture & Tourism category, where it secured an impressive 8th place globally. The country also performed strongly in Governance, Opportunity and Infrastructure, reinforcing its reputation as one of the most attractive destinations for immigrants, students, workers and tourists.
According to the report, Switzerland ranked first overall, followed by Denmark and Sweden. Canada placed just behind the United States, which ranked 18th globally.

Canada’s Strong Performance in Culture and Governance
The 2026 rankings evaluated 100 countries across 100 different indicators related to national well-being, economic growth, governance, infrastructure, health, tourism and environmental sustainability.
Canada’s highest-ranking category was Culture & Tourism. The report praised Canada’s multicultural identity, linguistic diversity, heritage attractions, museums and tourism appeal. The country’s multicultural approach, officially adopted in 1971, continues to influence its immigration policies and global image.
Canada also performed well in:
- Governance – 18th
- Opportunity – 18th
- Infrastructure – 20th
- Economic Development – 21st
These rankings highlight why Canada remains one of the most preferred immigration destinations for skilled workers and international students.
Canada’s Lowest Ranking Category
Despite strong performances in several sectors, Canada ranked 63rd in the Natural Environment category. This category assessed how effectively countries protect air quality, biodiversity and environmental sustainability.
However, analysts say the lower score did not significantly impact Canada’s global reputation due to its strong overall performance in governance, economy and quality of life indicators.
Why Canada Dropped from Previous Rankings
Canada ranked 2nd globally in 2023 and 4th in 2024 under the older ranking model. However, the 2026 report introduced a completely redesigned methodology.
Earlier rankings relied heavily on perception-based surveys involving more than 17,000 respondents across 36 countries. The new methodology instead uses statistical data collected from global organizations such as:
- United Nations
- OECD
- World Bank
- International Labour Organization
Experts say this shift explains Canada’s drop to 19th place and that comparisons with previous years are not directly comparable.
How the Rankings Were Calculated
The rankings were prepared using 100 indicators grouped into 24 subcategories and eight major scoring categories. The final rankings were determined using a geometric mean system, meaning countries had to perform consistently across all categories rather than relying on one strong area.
Governance and Economic Development received the highest weighting in the rankings process.
Countries also needed strong Human Development Index scores and at least 80% data availability across all indicators to qualify for inclusion.
Canada Continues to Attract Global Talent
Despite the ranking changes, Canada continues to remain one of the world’s top destinations for immigration, education and employment opportunities. Its strong governance, multicultural society, stable economy and welcoming immigration policies continue to attract skilled workers from around the world.
