Express Entry pool expands, competition intensifies for candidates

Canada’s Express Entry pool has grown significantly in recent weeks, becoming increasingly competitive despite a high number of invitations issued. Between March 15 and April 12, the pool added over 2,100 new profiles marking a reversal of the declining trend seen since early February.

This growth comes even as Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issued nearly 14,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) during the same period, indicating a strong influx of new candidates entering the system.

Surge in mid-to-high CRS score ranges

The increase was largely driven by candidates in the 451–480 Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score range, which saw a rise of 1,581 profiles. Notably, the 501–600 range previously declining due to frequent draws also rebounded with an addition of 571 profiles.

The most significant jump occurred in the 461–470 range, which alone gained 696 profiles. Overall, all score brackets between 401 and 480 recorded increases, contributing a combined gain of nearly 3,900 candidates.

Smaller draws, higher cut-offs

The growing competition at the top end of the pool was reflected in the latest Canadian Experience Class (CEC) draw held on April 14. Only 2,000 ITAs were issued the smallest CEC draw of 2026 while the CRS cut-off climbed to 515, up from 509 in the previous round.

This rise in cut-off scores, along with an extended tie-breaking date reaching back to June 2025, suggests a large backlog of high-scoring candidates and fewer invitations being issued per round.

Declines in lower score ranges

While higher score brackets expanded, some lower ranges saw declines. The 351–400 range dropped by over 1,200 profiles, likely due to targeted French-language draws that selected candidates with CRS scores as low as 393.

Additionally, the 481–490 and 491–500 ranges also experienced modest decreases, indicating ongoing movement of candidates out of these brackets through recent draws.

Recent draws yet to reflect in data

It is important to note that the April 12 pool data does not include three additional draws held between April 13 and April 15, which together issued 6,324 ITAs. These include:

• 4,000 invitations in a French-language proficiency draw (CRS 419)
• 2,000 invitations in a CEC draw (CRS 515)
• 324 invitations under the Provincial Nominee Program (CRS 786)

These rounds are expected to further impact the pool composition, particularly in higher score ranges.

Strong inflow of new candidates

Despite the large number of ITAs issued, the pool still grew by over 2,100 profiles. This suggests that approximately 16,000 new candidates entered the system within just four weeks outpacing the rate at which profiles were removed.

The increase in mid-range scores (401–480) indicates that more candidates with Canadian work experience and competitive qualifications are joining the pool.

What this means for applicants

The current Express Entry landscape is becoming more competitive, especially for candidates aiming through the CEC pathway. Rising cut-off scores and smaller draws suggest that applicants may need stronger CRS scores or additional factors such as provincial nominations or French-language proficiency to improve their chances.

As the pool continues to grow, staying competitive will be key for securing an invitation in upcoming rounds.
