Ontario has kicked off April 2026 with a targeted immigration draw, inviting 759 candidates through the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP). This draw focused on individuals with job offers in construction and mining-related occupations, reflecting the province’s growing demand in these sectors.
The invitations were issued under three key streams:
- Employer Job Offer: Foreign Worker Stream
- Employer Job Offer: International Student Stream
- In-Demand Skills Stream
To qualify, candidates were required to be currently residing in Canada with a valid work or study permit.
Key Highlights of the Draw
This marks Ontario’s fifth draw of 2026, following earlier rounds held in February and March. Notably, this is the first time Ontario has specifically targeted mining-related occupations, signaling increased opportunities in the sector.
Out of the total invitations:
- Foreign Worker Stream received the highest share (49%)
- Invitations and score requirements varied across streams:
- Foreign Worker: 372 invitations (minimum score: 56)
- International Student: 355 invitations (minimum score: 85)
- In-Demand Skills: 32 invitations (minimum score: 34)
Eligible profiles must have been submitted between July 2, 2025, and March 30, 2026, along with a valid job offer from an approved employer.
In-Demand Occupations
The draw targeted a wide range of occupations, including:
- Mining and geological engineers
- Electrical and electronics engineers
- Welders and industrial mechanics
- Heavy equipment operators and mechanics
- Occupational health and safety specialists
Some roles varied by stream, with positions like industrial electricians and heavy equipment operators included specifically under the International Student stream.
What Happens Next?
Selected candidates must submit their OINP application within 17 days, while employers must complete required documentation within 14 days of receiving the invitation.
Successful nominees will receive a provincial nomination, allowing them to apply for Canadian permanent residency (PR) through the federal government.
Why the Focus on Mining?
Ontario’s increased focus on mining occupations aligns with growing investments in the sector. The Canadian government has recently funded mining research initiatives in Northern Ontario, aiming to boost mineral exploration and economic growth.
The mining industry already supports over 700,000 jobs nationwide and contributes significantly to Canada’s economy.
Upcoming Changes to OINP
Ontario is also preparing for major immigration reforms. New changes to the Ontario Immigration Act, effective May 30, 2026, will replace current streams, including those used in this draw. Further details on new pathways are yet to be announced.
