Canada has introduced a significant update to its Express Entry system that directly impacts candidates applying under category-based selection.
As of February 18, 2026, Express Entry candidates must now demonstrate at least 12 months of work experience in an eligible occupation within the past three years to qualify for an occupational category.
Previously, candidates were required to show only six months of continuous work experience within the past three years. Under the new rule, the required 12 months of experience does not need to be continuous, offering some flexibility for applicants.
This change applies to all Express Entry occupational categories.
Category-based selection remains one of the most effective pathways to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residence, as it targets candidates with in-demand professional experience.
What Remains Unchanged in Work Experience Rules
While the duration requirement has increased, several key conditions remain the same:
- Work experience must have been gained within the past three years.
- Experience must be in a single eligible occupation.
- Full-time work is defined as at least 30 hours per week.
- Part-time work can qualify if it equals the full-time requirement (for example, 15 hours per week for 24 months).
- Any hours worked beyond 30 hours per week do not count as additional experience.
- Work experience can be gained in Canada or abroad, except for categories that specifically require Canadian experience.
For Canadian work experience, time gained while enrolled as a full-time student including co-op work terms does not count toward eligibility.
