Parent visa
Applicants for a visa in the Parent category must be sponsored by their son/daughter who is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, who is willing and able to sponsor you. Please note that there are 1,000 places available for regular parent visas, and there is a long wait for this type of visa.
A Parent / Applicant should meet the following requirements to apply for Parent visa:
- The applicant must be a parent of a child who is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen.
- The applicant's child must be settled in Australia (in most cases, lawfully and permanently resident for at least 2 years) and generally must sponsor the applicant.
- The applicant must meet health and character requirements
- The applicant must pass the balance of family test. That is, the number of children who are lawfully and permanently resident in Australia must be:
- Greater than, or equal to, the total number of children who are resident overseas; or
- Greater than the greatest number of children who are resident in any single overseas country.
- An Assurance of Support and an Assurance of Support bond (held for 2 years) must be provided. Lodgement of this bond is not required until just before grant of a visa.
Contributory Parent visa - A normal parent visa means that the application goes into a queue and this queue takes 15 years. There is one further option to bypass the waiting period - the Contributory Parent visa.
In the year 2003, the Australian government created a new type of visa to ease the waiting period. These newer "contributory" parent visa categories require the payment of a much higher application fee to cover medical expenses, but they are processed much faster than the former parent visa applications.
Aged Parent visa - This visa is for the parents of Australian citizens or legal residents to reunite with their children in Australia. If you have children living in Australia, you may be able to join your family and see your grandchildren growing up. To apply for this visa, one of you - if you are a couple - must be over the legal age for retirement in Australia.
The applicant only be granted a Parent visa when applying within Australia if the applicant is aged. An aged parent is one who is old enough to be granted an Australian age pension. This does not mean that the applicants will receive the age pension, as they must have been an Australian permanent resident for ten years to access the age pension. |
